Marketing Plan

marketing-plan_-_amazingbizsecretsNearly everyone knows to be successful you need a business plan, yet many entrepreneurs don’t realize a marketing plan is just as vital. Unlike a business plan, a marketing plan focuses on winning and keeping customers; it’s strategic and includes numbers, facts and objectives.

A good marketing plan spells out all the tools and tactics you’ll use to achieve your sales goals.

It’s your plan of action – the type of product or service you’ll be offering, the type of person who will want to buy it and the tactics you’ll use to generate leads that result in sales.

Here’s a closer look at creating a marketing plan that works:

Step 1: Begin with a quick “overlook” of your company’s current situation, called a “situation analysis.”

This first section defines your company and its products or services, then it will show how your benefits separate you from the competition.

Target audiences have become extremely specialized and segmented. No matter your industry, from restaurants to professional services to retail clothing stores, positioning your product or service competitively requires an understanding of your NICHE market.

How Are You Going to Provide Better Value?

Not only do you need to be able to describe what you market, but you must also have a clear understanding of what your competitors are offering and be able to show how your product or service provides a better value.

Make a list of the company’s strengths and weaknesses. Strengths and weaknesses refer to characteristics that exist within your business, while opportunities and threats refer to outside factors. To determine your company’s strengths, consider the ways that its products are superior to others, or if your service is more comprehensive, for example; What do you offer that gives your business a competitive advantage? Weaknesses, on the other hand, can be anything from operating in a highly saturated market to inexperienced employees or team.

Next, describe any external opportunities you can capitalize on, such as; is the market for your product or service expanding or decreasing?  How will you over-come any threats to your company profits?

You must analyze your product’s features and decide how they distinguish your product from its competitors.

Investigate and describe what type of buyer is most likely to purchase your product. What are you selling? Convenience? Quality? Discount pricing? You can’t offer it all. Knowing what your customers WANT will you create a product or service they will want to purchase.

Step 2: Describe your target audience.

Creating a simple, one-paragraph profile of your prospective customer is essential.  YOU MUST KNOW WHO WANTS YOUR PRODUCT. You can describe prospects in terms of demographics—age, sex, family composition, earnings and geographic location—as well as lifestyle. Ask yourself the following: Are my customers conservative or innovative? Leaders or followers? Timid or aggressive? Traditional or modern? Introverted or extroverted? How often do they purchase what I offer? In what quantity?

If you’re a business-to-business marketer, you may define your target audience based on their type of business, job title, size of business, geographic location or any other characteristics that make them possible prospects. No matter who your target audience is, be sure to narrowly define WHO they are. This will be your guide as you plan your media and public relations campaigns.

Step 3: List your marketing goals.

What do you want your marketing plan to achieve? For example; are you hoping for a 20 percent increase in sales of your product per quarter? Write down a short list of goals—and make them measurable so that you’ll know when you’ve achieved them.

Step 4: Develop the marketing strategies you’ll use.

This aspect is the NUTS AND BOLTS of your marketing plan. In the previous sections, you outlined what your marketing must accomplish and identified your best prospects; now it’s time to detail the tactics you’ll use to reach these prospects and accomplish your goals.

A good marketing program targets prospects at all stages of your sales cycle. Some marketing tactics, such as many forms of advertising, public relations and direct marketing, are great for reaching cold prospects.

Warm prospects—those who’ve previously been exposed to your marketing message and perhaps even met you personally—will respond best to permission-based email, loyalty programs and customer appreciation events, among others.

Your hottest prospects are individuals who’ve been exposed to your sales and marketing messages and are ready to close a sale. Generally, interpersonal sales contact (whether in person, by phone, or email) combined with marketing adds the final heat necessary to close sales.

To complete your STRATEGY section, outline your primary marketing strategies, then include a variety of tactics you’ll use to reach prospects at any point in your sales cycle.

For example, you might combine outdoor billboards, print advertising and online local searches to reach cold prospects but use email to contact your warm prospects.

Discover exactly what type of media your audience will respond to. Which types of media will reach your audience? Avoid broad-based media—even if it attracts your target audience.  If it is not relevant then it’s a waste of time and money. The marketing tactics you choose must reach your prospects when they’ll be most receptive to your message.

Step 5: Set your marketing budget.

You’ll need to devote a percentage of projected gross sales to your annual marketing budget. Of course, when starting a business, this may mean using newly acquired funding, borrowing or self-financing. Just bear this in mind—marketing is absolutely essential to the success of your business. And with so many different kinds of tactics available for reaching out to every conceivable audience niche, there’s a certain mix of methods to reach your target market – even if you’re on a low budget.

The key is to NEVER stop marketing—never stop spreading the word, and don’t concern yourself with the more costly tactics until you earn more profits and they become more affordable.

33 Affordable Ways To Promote Your Business

33 Affordable Ways to Promote Your Business

affordable-promotionWhat’s the best way to promote your business? How can you advertise your business and get your name in front of potential prospects when you’re on a low budget? How can you get the word out about your business in the most affordable way?

1.KNOW WHO YOUR AUDIENCE (BUYERS) ARE.  What do they look like?  Who are they?  What is the age group?  What are their hobbies?  What are their interests?  Do you work full time or part time?  What is their income level?  When you know who your market is, then you fit your promotional strategies towards your target market.

2. If you don’t have a website – get one quickly. If you can’t afford to have someone custom-design your own.  It’s easy with WordPress. There are millions of websites created every day using WordPress.  They also have “plugins” that are free and can help enhance the features of your site.  Make time to learn WordPress – it will be a great investment of time and energy.

3. Set up a listing for your business in search engine local directories.
Google and Bing both offer a free listing for local businesses.
To get listed on Google, go to Google My Business.
To get listed on Bing, go to Bing Places for Business
Yahoo charges for local listings, but you get listed on a lot more than Yahoo if you buy their service. The service, called Yahoo Localworks, costs $29.99 a month and lists you in 50 directories including Yahoo Local, Yelp, WhitePages, Bing, Mapquest and more. The benefit of paying: You have a single location to enter your data to make it consistent and available on multiple online directories that your customers might search to find what you sell.

      1. Set your business profile or page up on Linkedin, Facebook, Google Plus and Twitter. Be sure your business profile includes a good description, keywords and a link to your website. Look for groups or conversations that talk about your type of products or services and participate in the conversations, but don’t spam them with constant promos for what you sell.  A great way to PROMOTE your business.
      2. Business Cards and postcards (used as fliers) are always an inexpensive method to promote your business.  Place all your contact information on your business card or postcard.  Your website and email address should be printed and easily seen Promote your business today.
      3. Make sure to utilize an affordable email service, and send an email newsletter and/or promotional offers to customers and prospects for your business.   An email service (see Resources at the top of this website)
      4. Get your business cards into the hand of anyone who can help you in your search for new clients. Call your friends and relatives and tell them you have started a business. Visit them and leave a small stack of business cards to hand out to their friends.
      5. Talk to all the vendors from whom you buy products or services. Give them your business card, and ask if they can use your products or service, or if they know anyone who can. If they have bulletin boards where business cards are displayed (printers often do, and so do some supermarkets, hairdressers, etc.), ask if yours can be added to the board.
      6. Attend meetings of professional groups, and groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, or civic associations. Have business cards in a pocket where they are easily reachable. Don’t forget to ask what the people you speak with do, and to really listen to them. They’ll be flattered by your interest, and better remember you because of it.
      7. Join clubs or organizations who target your customers. If they charge a fee, then pay it.  It could be a great investment. If the group has a website and publishes a list members on the site, make sure your name and website link get added.
      8. Get involved in 2 or 3 groups. That will give you more opportunity to meet possible prospects. Do not be an opportunist.  People recognize a greed hustler and they will avoid you. Bond with the group on other levels without a sleazy sales pitch. Help them with their problems first.
      9. Publicize the most unique asset about you or your business. Send out press releases to local newspapers, radio stations, cable TV stations, magazines whose audiences are likely to be interested in buying what you sell. Be sure to post the press releases on one or more online press release services, too, being sure to include links to your website. To increase your chance of having the material published, send along a photo (but not to radio stations) with your press release. Editors of printed publications are often in need of “art” (drawings or photos) to fill space and break up the gray look of a page of text.  Another great way to Promote.
      10. Write an article illustrating your expertise in your market Send it to noncompeting newspapers, magazines, and websites in your field that accept submissions from experts. Be sure your name, business name, phone number, and a reference to your product or service is included at the end of the article. If the editor can use the article you get your name in print, and possibly get your contact information printed for free, too.
      11. Publicize your publicity. Whenever you do get publicity, get permission from the publisher to reprint the article containing the publicity. Make photocopies and mail the copies out with sales letters or any other literature you use to market your product or service. The publicity clips lend credibility to the claims you make for your products or services.
      12. Request work or leads others. Contact nonprofit organizations, schools and colleges, and even other businesses that have customers who may need your services.  This is invaluable – great way to promote.
      13. Network with others who earn a living in the same industry. Let them know you are available to handle their work overloads. (But don’t try to steal their customers.
      14. Make yourself available as a speaker. Industry conferences, volunteer organizations, libraries, and local business groups often need speakers for meetings. You’ll benefit from the name recognition.
      15. If your product or service is appropriate, give demonstrations of it to whatever groups or individuals might be interested. Or, teach others how to use some tool you use in your work.
      16. Create unique Youtube videos.  Also-sharing and slide-sharing sites.
      17. Find out what federal, state, and local government programs are in existence to help you get started in business. Most offer free business counseling, and some can put you in touch with government agencies and large corporations that buy from small and woman-owned businesses
      18. If you’re a woman-owned or minority-owned business look into getting certified by private, state or federal organizations. Many purchasing agents have quotas or guide for the amount of goods and services they need to buy from minority- and woman-owned businesses.
      19. Send out sales letters or postcards to everyone you think could be able to use what you sell. Be sure to describe your business in terms of how it can help the prospect.  Develop an ELEVATOR PITCH.  Promote your business to others with a short 30 second pitch – learn how to describe your business and the greatest benefit in 30 seconds.
      20. If you use a car or truck in your business have your business name and contact information professionally painted on the side of the vehicle. That way your means of transportation becomes a vehicle for advertising your business. If you don’t want the business name painted on the vehicle, consider using magnetic signs.
      21. Get on the telephone and make “cold calls.” These are calls to people who you would like to do business with. Briefly describe what you do and ask for an appointment to talk to them about ways you can benefit them.
      22. Get samples of your product or your work into as many hands as possible.
      23. Offer a free, no obligation consultation to people you think could use your services. During such consultations offer some practical suggestions or ideas–and before you leave ask for an “order” to implement the ideas.
      24. Always ask for referrals. Ask existing customers, prospects and casual acquaintances. When you get them, follow up on the leads.
      25. Utilize the famous word of mouth method. Instead of (or in addition to) selling your products yourself, look for affiliates, resellers or people who will generate leads for you in return for a commission on sales.
      26. Create an Arrangement with other businesses who serve the same market, but sell different products and services. Make arrangements to pass leads back and forth, or share mailings.
      27. Have sales letters, flyers and other pertinent information printed and ready to go. Ask prospects who seem reluctant to buy from you: “Would you like me to send information?” Follow up promptly with a note and a letter that says, “Here is the information you requested.
      28. Run a contest. Make the prize something desirable and related to your business — it could be a free gift basket of your products, for instance, or free services.
      29. Utilize all the pay per click methods on the Internet.  They can become fairly handy. If you are not yet advertising on search engines search for offers that give you $50 or $75 in free advertising to start.
      30. Buy Ads in ONLINE newsletters.  Newsletters can have thousand of subscribers.  Request your promotional email to be blasted out to thousands of their subscribers for a fee.  It works.  See Mentors.

Guarding Trade Secrets

trade-secrets-amazingbizsecretsMost companies GUARD trade secrets the best they can.  Through this desire to protect their success secrets is the reason it’s sometimes difficult for you to succeed. You must not only know the basics of business, but if you wish to compete with another company or market, then you must dig, scratch and climb the highest mountains.  Seek out great mentors whenever possible.

Companies fear competition as it eats into their profits- therefore they GUARD TRADE SECRETS.  If it took you long hours and years to accomplish success, then you may want to guard your secrets as well.

How should YOUR businesses be protecting YOUR trade secrets?
Adding simple computer features like security software and computer logouts and locks can reduce your exposure.

Companies should also limit access to sensitive company information to certain employees. Train employees to safeguard company information by locking it away after the workday, to keep and frequently change passwords on their computers and mobile devices, to avoid suspicious links and emails, and to shred hard documents.

Additionally, the use of external hard drives and thumb drives can make it easy to transport data, but also leaves it unsecured. It might be wise to prohibit their use can DECREASE the loss of the company’s trade secrets.

Have nondisclosure agreements with contractors, consultants, suppliers, vendors and other business partners that set forth the terms of the disclosure of any confidential information, including what is considered to be confidential, the term of the agreement, and the provisions for a breach of the agreement arising from an improper disclosure of trade secrets.

Employment agreements should also contain nondisclosure provisions to protect confidential information.

What does the Defend Trade Secrets Act of 2016 mean for businesses?
Although the DTSA may provide added protections for companies, you still need to take precautions:

It May Benefit You to Guard Trade Secrets.

■  Limit exposure to certain employees. Educate your employees to protect the company’s trade secrets. Your trade secrets could be compromised by an ‘innocent’ social media post of a picture taken in a production area or discussions in unsecure locations like restaurants and airports.  Explain this to your employees – you never know who is listening.

■  You should eliminate unnecessary visitors or limit them from vulnerable ares of your company.  This policy can decrease the loss of trade secrets tremendously.

■  Revise employee agreements to fulfill the notice requirement of the DTSA for trade secret disclosure to the government. Under the new law, companies must provide notice of whistleblower and retaliation protections for reporting suspected trade secret violations to both current employees and contractors.

If this NOTICE is not provided, the company may lose exemplary damages and attorney’s fees in an action against that employee. You should also include a procedure in your company policies for an employee to report suspected trade secret violations to government officials.

Review and update current company trade secret policies to comply with the DTSA, taking into account soon-to-be former employees that may take trade secrets from the company and new employees that could bring trade secrets from a previous job.

It is uncertain how the DTSA will impact future litigation. However, businesses should review current agreements to comply with the new law. Trade secrets are valuable assets that must be protected. Creating policies to safeguard trade secrets within the organization can help to protect them. Get more information here.

Step 3. Write the Press Release

The release should be 3 to 4 paragraphs, no more than 400 words. More than 400 words will cost more for distribution. Get each keyword into the release at least 3 or 4 times: (don’t over do it.)

  • once in the heading
  • once in the initial paragraph – preferably the first sentence
  • and two more times throughout the text – preferably in the last paragraph

Think Through Your Contact Info

Include a real phone number and email address for people to get a hold of you. But, don’t give out your day-to-day contact information.

Hint: You’ll appear more like a “big” company if you don’t use your name as the point of contact, especially if the quote within the release is your own. You can make up a name or use an employee name.

Both your main keyword, your name, and your URL should be in the heading or at least the sub-heading. It should specifically state the occasion and it’s value. This is tricky because from a news perspective, it should NOT be a SALES LETTER. (benefit oriented).

1st Paragraph

The initial sentence should have your location (City, State.) – who you are and what your big announcement. Nine times out of ten this is simply a reiteration of your heading but, remember, often people will only read the first line of your release and the last line.

The rest of the paragraph is just a little more information on what it is: features and benefits.

2nd Paragraph

This should be a quote about why this occasion is important to your marketing promotion and the goal or mission?

3rd Paragraph of Your Press Release.

This paragraph wraps it all up. You should get your keywords into the text again, and dive a little deeper into the detail of what will happen with this occasion. Also, be sure to weave into this paragraph your URL one more time. If you can include a video in your press release, put the link in the last sentence. This will increase your conversion rate up to 10 times.

Example: Each day a new topic covers things like advice on how to become a leader in starting your own business, why very few people ever make a six-figure income in this industry, online marketing secrets, online marketing automation, and attraction marketing. Viewers will walk away with an understanding of how to turn leads into customers and the 23 questions you should be asking before starting your own business. The series is available free at www.AmazingBizSecrets.com

4th Paragraph

The final paragraph is simply a write up of your internet marketing promotion or your business. This should be a paragraph of information specifically about your business that you should have on file. Just copy and paste it into all press releases.

Step 4: Distribute Your Press Release

It’s so much easier now to distribute a release than in the old days before the Internet. Create an account at any or all of the below sites and start copying and pasting your text from your text document into the forms of the distribution site. Once you’ve logged-in it will be apparent what to do.

A few extra tips:

www.WebWire.com will distribute your release the quickest, within about 15 minutes.

www.24-7PressReleases.com allows you to attach a video, which will get a higher conversion rate. Google loves videos so this will help you rank higher, organically.

Top TV Pitchmen Dead-Prison

Top TV Pitchmen Dead or in Prison

don-lapre -TV-pitchmenYou have to be blind and deaf if you’ve never seen or heard of Don LaPre, Kevin Trudeau, Billy Mays and Ed McMahon.  All top TV pitchmen are dead or in Prison.

One of the best most seen man on TV in the 90’s is Don Lapre. His claim ot fame is;  “I placed tiny classified ads and lived in a tiny one bedroom apartment.”   Although Don never graduated from high school he became a self-made millionaire all from the sale of products on TV.

The “King of Infomercials” Don Lapre, the high-energy TV ads for moneymaking kits and products.

Married with two daughters, the charismatic pitchman’s website boasts about his “3 best friends :-)” – his two daughters and wife of 23 years – and seemed to be enjoying a booming business, his infomercials so familiar they were parodied by David Letterman and Saturday Night Live.

Lapre had several “how to make money online” products and sold to the home based business audiences.

But in June it all came crashing down. Lapre was charged with 41 counts of conspiracy, mail fraud, wire fraud and promotional money laundering. Arrested and indicted, he allegedly scammed more than $50 million from at least 220,000 people between 2004 and 2007.

Then on Oct. 2, two days before he was stand trial on charges that could have sent him to federal prison for 25 years, Lapre was found dead in his Arizona jail cell of an apparent suicide. It’s said he sliced his own throat and bled to death in his jail cell.

kevin-trudeauKevin Trudeau is another rags to rich story.  He became an infomercial sensation almost overnight. He was seen by millions of people all over the country.  He owned expensive cars, jets and smoked $50 cigars. He was on top of the world.

Trudeau is sentenced to 10 years in prison.

“Since his 20s, he has steadfastly attempted to cheat others for his own gain,” Guzman said, adding that Trudeau is “deceitful to the very core.”

Trudeau was also heavily involved in making money online and providing kits for how to make money and opportunities.

Jurors convicted Trudeau of criminal contempt in November for defying a 2004 court order barring him from running false ads about the weight-loss book. Despite the order, he aired the infomercials at least 32,000 times, according to prosecutors.

He sold more than 850,000 copies of the weight-loss book, generating $39 million in revenue, prosecutors say. And the judge agreed with prosecutors that the amount of loss stemming from Trudeau’s deception was more than $37 million — nearly the amount in revenue.

But in remarks Monday asking for a sentence of less than two years for his client, defense attorney Tom Kirsch said the harm Trudeau caused was minor compared to fraud in which some people are cheated out of their life savings.

But Guzman showed little sympathy, appearing angry as he said that Trudeau had thumbed his nose at the justice system by violating multiple court orders since the 1990s.

Trudeau became rich selling millions of books with titles such as “Natural Cures ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About” and “Debt Cures ‘They’ Don’t Want You to Know About,” touting them in commercials with a news-interview formats.

His weight-loss book, which once topped best-seller lists, was the focus of the criminal conviction for which he was sentenced. It also was the subject of related civil case brought by the Federal Trade Commission, in which Trudeau was ordered to pay a $37 million judgment.

In that civil case, Trudeau said he couldn’t pay the judgment because he’s broke. But FTC lawyers balked at that claim, accusing him of hiding money in shell companies. Trudeau, they noted, has spent lavishly in recent years, including $359 on two haircuts.

Meanwhile . . . Trudeau sits in prison.

Billy-Mays-TV-pitchmenBilly Mays one of the best professional pitchmen in the business died of a heat attack brought about by a cocaine over-dose.  Some say he died an accidental bang of the head, but most professionals say that cocaine played a big part in his death.

William DarrellBillyMays, Jr. (July 20, 1958 – June 28, 2009)was an American television pitchman most notable for promoting Fix-it, Oxiclean, Orange Glo, Kaboom, and other cleaning, home-based, and maintenance products on the Home Shopping Network, and through his company, Mays Promotions, Inc.

He and his business partner, Anthony Sullivan, were also featured on PitchMen, a TV series that documented their work. His distinctive beard and impassioned sales pitches made him a recognized television presence in the United States andCanada.

ed-mcmahonThe great Ed McMahon died bankrupt and broke.  After serving Johnny Carson for over 30 years, the great pitch man asked Johnny Carson for financial assistance, but he refused.  The bank was about to foreclose on his big house and leave him and his wife homeless, but Donald Trump heard of his unfortunate situation and purchased the house and told Ed McMahan he could live there for as long as wanted.  Ed died broke through a series of bad investments and some speculate that family members may have played a role in the loss of his wealth.

4 Ingredients For an Effective Facebook Business Ad

Ingredients Needed For Effective Facebook  Ads

Ingredients needed for effective facebook ads1) Visual.  Use a Photo.

Facebook ads have become part of the promotional arsenal for online and offline businesses. It’s urgent you learn these few essential ingredients.  They are not difficult, however, often times they are overlooked.  Mentors will help you succeed also.

Visual content is usually treated more favorably in the Facebook algorithm. What’s more, visual content is more engaging in the ever-changing News Feed, and therefore has more of a chance of grabbing the attention of your potential customers.  No matter what type of ad you make, your image needs to be visually appealing and ALWAYS attention grabbing.

2) Your Ad Must be Relevant To Your Target Audience.

Naturally, this is highly important, however, you’d be surprise how many people place ads for a market who has ZERO interest.  One of the main reasons people do not buy is because they simply DO NOT want what you’re selling.  Relevance is critical for success when using Facebook advertising. Remember, you are spending money when someone views or clicks on your ad. If you’re showing ads that aren’t relevant to your target audience, then you’re wasting your time and money and will likely not see success with any kind of advertising.  This all sounds like common sense, but some people seriously miss this point.

3) The Must Provide an Overwhelming Proposition to Your Facebook Ads.

A value proposition tells the reader why they should click on your ad to learn more about your product. The ad must be so powerful that people would feel foolish if they DIDN’t CLICK on the ad to learn more. How is your product or service different from any other? Why should the viewer click on your ad to see your website?

The ad or proposition must be believable. Don’t make up stuff. Saying you have the greatest SERVICE in the world will not make people come to your business’s Page, but maybe offering a hefty discount of 50% will or adding social proof such as;  our services is enjoyed by over ONE MILLION people.

4) Your Ad Must Have a Clear CALL TO ACTION.

You must tell your people what you want them to do next.  An incredible and relevant ad is great, but without a call-to-action, your viewer might not know what to do next. Add something like; “Buy now and save X%,” or “Offer ends soon” and add a sense of urgency to your viewer. Your CALL TO ACTION should encourage people to click on your ad now.  There must be an urgency.  People love to naturally procrastinate.  If they know they could miss out on a ‘deal’, then might click now.  Here’s are a few mentors who can show you all the secrets you need to succeed.

Wealthy People Still Use Offshore Banking?

offshore banking - Amazing Biz SecretsMany wealthy Americans are running out of ingenious ways to hide their money. Is “Offshore Banking” still a good idea?  The IRS has been opening secret Swiss bank accounts on US citizens. Just last month, a settlement with the private bank – BSI – revealed bankers are using coded language and nameless credit cards to help Americans avoid taxes. Credit Suisse and UBS, Switzerland’s largest banks, have already paid fines for similar shenanigans.

The IRS, if possible, would take 100% of your money. They have no empathy for your situation or how hard you work.  Their job is to remove as much money from you as possible, even if it is illegal for them to do it.

The rest of the world is also getting less hospitable to American tax dodgers. A 2010 federal law, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, requires all foreign banks to report to the IRS on their American customers. IRS is certainly aware of offshore banks and what many people use them for.  It’s working so well that Americans abroad say they’re having problems opening accounts even for legitimate purposes. Banks don’t want the regulatory and paperwork hassle.

What’s left for the secretive and tax-averse wealthy American? Not much, accountants and attorneys say. Here are a few ways the wealthy can still get privacy or lower taxes—though rarely both at the same time.

Offshore Banking?

There are many legal and good reasons to have an overseas or offshore bank account. Americans who live overseas might want ready access to their money. An offshore trust may offer more protection from creditors or lawsuits than one set up in the U.S. An overseas limited liability company, or LLC, might let you hide aspects of your business from competitors. That’s “totally” legal.

Traditionally, banks in tax havens such as Switzerland haven’t reported those accounts to the IRS, making it possible to hide not just what’s in the account but its entire existence.

Hide Money Inside a Shell

The wealthy often use shell companies, like LLCs, to buy property or investments, so that the company name, not the individual, shows up on public documents. Another reason these structures are used to buy into hedge funds, private equity, and venture capital funds: Rich investors mostly want to avoid endless solicitations for other investments. Once your name gets on an investment list, you get called by every proposal. Other investors won’t know your business, the IRS still will because LLCs are required to file tax returns every year.  Offshore banking is another method of keeping prying eyes away.

Use a Trust

Trusts can be used to keep assets hidden from nosy neighbors and to keep tax bills down, within reason. Income from property or investments held in the trust goes to the beneficiaries free of estate or gift taxes. Beneficiaries also can avoid regular income taxes—if the trust pays the taxes rather than the individual. Another advantage of trusts is the way they pass automatically to heirs after your death. Otherwise, your possessions and the details of your estate can be hammered in the probate system, which is not necessary.

Hire an Expert

The wealthy can still afford to hire sophisticated accountants, who spend years searching for legal methods to lower tax bills – including offshore banking.  Offshore accounts may be a thing of the past, however, it is still a tool. Most of the time, the goal isn’t to hide money but to control the timing of income and what form it arrives in. For example, taxpayers can pay lower rates if income is in the form of long-term capital gains rather than ordinary income.

Still, clients are getting cautious about aggressive tax planning, especially if it involves any overseas transactions. Taxpayers now know the IRS is watching what happens overseas.  Hide your money cautiously. Remember, the IRS is not your friend and never will be.
